How to filter and set view properties for many Lotus Notes views

Trying to pin down which views or folders that have any given properties enabled set can be a time consuming and all-around boring task.

For example, let's say an application contains 50 views, all of which need to have a consistent look and feel. A Lotus Notes developer would then need to dedicate hours of mind-numbing effort—simply clicking and choosing a property (i.e. alternate row color, font color, font size etc).

Or you might be thinking: "Wait a sec, I'll just use DXL (Domino Extensible Language) when the round-tripping issues are sorted out". But, DXL by itself is just a stepping stone—you'd still need to code yourself a parser to go through the DXL, and you'd not have a flexible GUI that is already available in viewEZ.

In this tip you will see how you can use viewEZ to quickly filter out and change all the views in a database in literally in just a minute or two.

First make sure viewEZ is running. If it's not, select any Lotus Notes database (email, personal address book, application etc.) on your workspace, and click the viewEZ icon on your Lotus Notes client toolbar.

  1. In the first viewEZ window, select the views or folders you want to change using the checkboxes.
  2. Click the Views... button and the View Properties window opens with all the same view properties you would find in the Domino Designer.
  3. Select one or several view properties that you want to apply. Once the desired properties are selected click Apply.

  4. Lotus Notes View Properties about to be applied on a database wide scale Mass-modify view properties all at once
  5. [Alternative] If you already have an existing view you can use it as a "template" (even if it's in a different database). Use the Populate Tab Using Another View or Folder button (found in each view property tab) to quickly populate the current tab with the properties from the selected view template.

Congratulations! You are now finished updating the properties of all the selected views and folders in a Lotus Notes database.

[Bonus tip] The Filter by Property option in viewEZ lets you narrow down a selection of views or folders by entering properties which must be matched.
